SwapFS

What it is

SwapFS is a macOS app that makes every file on every storage you connect available at local disk speed, with zero copies on your computer. One bar searches your files, runs commands and asks your own agent.

It requires macOS 26 or later on Apple Silicon.

Files stay where they live

Footage, scenes, photo archives and agent workspaces stay on the storage you connect, whether that is Google Drive, a NAS or a bucket, and they open as if they were local. A file opens when you open it, never before. Pin the folder you work on to keep it offline, unpin it to free the room.

One bar for the rest

Search starts as you type, offline, with no account. Apps, files, folders, contacts, calendar and settings come back in one ranked list, and operators such as kind:, in:, modified: and size: narrow it down. Every result carries its next action: open, reveal, Quick Look, an alias or its own hotkey.

The search runs in a separate process on your computer. It ranks with BM25 and frecency, the index is encrypted at rest and it makes no network calls. Plugins handle the small jobs: a calculator with units and currency, window snapping, kill process, quicklinks and emoji. The clipboard history sits in the same bar, encrypted and local.

Bring your own agent

Ask works with the agent CLIs you already use, some of them through their Agent Client Protocol (ACP) adapter. Your agent reads and writes a drive like a folder on your computer, so every tool sees the same files and nothing is copied.

Stack

A native Swift app for macOS. The website and the documentation are Astro on Cloudflare Workers, with React islands, a three.js hero and typed catalogs for 44 languages. The signed disk images are served from Cloudflare R2. Read more at swapfs.com.
